LifeSmarts Team Captures 8th Place at National Competition; Individual Awards, Too

The West Chicago High School LifeSmarts Team represented Illinois at the 2022 National LifeSmarts Competition and finished in 8th place. The competition took place in Washington D.C. April 21-24.

Members of the team included Sean Slattery (team captain), Christina Guo, Angie Jacobo, Arely Jacobo, and Dana Tomasevic.

The team began the competition by defeating Minnesota 120 -100.  “This was a very exciting match with our team trailing Minnesota 90 to 60 halfway through the completion.  They had a very nice rally at the end to win,” said Don Zabelin, coach of the WeGo LifeSmarts Team.

The team won their next match 140 – 80 over Florida and their third match 120 – 115 over Missouri.  “Missouri was a very tough team and our players built a 100 – 45 lead which enabled them to hang on for the very narrow victory,” Zabelin said.

The tournament ended for the West Chicago team when they lost to Wisconsin 130-105.

The following students won individual awards:

Dana Tomasevic – 5th Place Personal Finance Assessment

Sean Slattery – 1st Place for the Infographic on Avoiding the Purchase of Counterfeit Goods ($100 Award).

Angie Jacobo – 1st Place for her report on being a Safety Ambassador and speaking to 5th graders at Courier Elementary School about over-the-counter medicine safety ($1000 College Scholarship).
