The Board of Education recently approved the 2019-2020 tentative school calendar. This means the calendar is not final; changes could still occur due to pending legislation in Springfield.
Last fall, the legislature repealed the 5-hour school day minimum, leaving the definition of a school day up to local school districts. School districts were waiting for guidance from the Illinois State Board of Education when in January, Senate Bill 28 was introduced to reinstate the school day to a 5-hour minimum. Shortly after, the Illinois State Board of Education closed the online calendar approval module, therefore all school districts in Illinois were unable to submit their 2019-2020 calendars to the state for approval.
Now in its 3rd reading, the bill could be called any time for a vote on the Senate floor. If modifications are needed to our tentative calendar as a result of this legislation, we will let you know.
