Know Your Rights
At CHS District 94, we are committed to ensuring that all students and families feel safe, supported, and informed about their rights. Whether you are a student, parent, or guardian, understanding your legal rights is essential in navigating challenges related to immigration, education, and personal security.
Below, you will find a collection of resources from trusted organizations that offer guidance, support, and legal information for individuals and families.
Your Rights in Schools
-
Every student, regardless of immigration status, has the right to a free public education.
-
Schools are safe zones, and immigration enforcement agencies generally do not conduct activities on school grounds.
-
Students and families have the right to privacy. Schools cannot share student information, including immigration status, without consent or legal requirement.
-
If you or your child experience discrimination or harassment, report it to school administration or the district office.
Your Rights in the Community
-
If approached by law enforcement or immigration officials, you have the right to remain silent and refuse to answer questions about your immigration status.
-
You have the right to ask for an attorney before signing any documents.
-
You do not have to allow immigration officers into your home unless they have a valid warrant signed by a judge.
-
If stopped while driving, you must show your driver’s license, registration, and proof of insurance, but you do not need to answer questions about your immigration status.
