What do counselors do
Counselors work with students, parents and teachers in three major areas:
Academic
- Setting up and changing schedules for appropriate placement based on students' abilities and future goals
- Help to resolve teacher/student conflicts
- Provide support with the development of students' study skills
- Discuss performance in classes and work with students and their parents to work towards continued improvement
- Help explore their interests, aptitudes and abilities and how they relate to the world of work
- Help students develop appropriate plans for meeting their career goals (graduation, Technology Center of DuPage, work programs (BTI/CWT), college, etc.)
- Provide students and parents with information regarding post-secondary options
- Assist students with their applications to colleges and universities, in addition to helping them complete requests for financial assistance (FAFSA, scholarships)
- Help students explore relationship issues (family, peer, staff)
- Work with teachers regarding particular students' behaviors and needs in order for them to be successful in the school environment
- Coordinate with school staff (social worker, school psychologist, support programs) and outside agencies to access needed support to be successful
Counselors are considered to be your student’s advocate in the school – whether that is through working with other students, teachers, parents and/or community agencies. They are here to provide information, services and supports that are needed. The Counseling Team is uniquely organized, not by alphabet, but by student needs and family. To the right, you will find a listing of the Counselors at Community High School District 94, in addition to the Counseling Department Support Staff and other important people. Please contact your student's Counselor with questions and/or for help. Their contact information is provided.
Who is my or my student's Counselor? You can tell by looking at student IDs or schedules. In each place, you will find 2 capital letters. These are the initials of your or your student's Counselor.
Each student also has access to the School Counseling Google classrooms. These classrooms have valuable information about college & career planning, scholarships, upcoming events, announcements, and much other information.
