Carly F. - Republican

I. I was born in Elmhurst, Illinois on March 21st 1994. I only lived their briefly, and then moved to Bartlett. I was homeschooled for two years and then attended school in Bartlett. In fifth grade, I moved to West Chicago. Here at West Chicago High School I have been involved in Student Counsel, Interact Club, Student Ambassador Club, NHS, and have played on the soccer team. In the summer, I work as a lifeguard at Turtle Splash Waterpark. I love music and play guitar and piano. I’m also very into photography and plan on continuing that in my future. Next fall I am attending Lipscomb University which is located in Nashville, Tennessee. And I am minoring in Biology and majoring in Psychology in hopes to become an addictions counselor. In terms of traveling, I have never been outside of the U.S. but I hope to change that soon. I love vacationing in South Carolina and have close family friends who have a beach house there. My favorite city that I’ve been to is Boston, I love all the art and shopping that is there. The most interesting place I’ve ever been to is Provincetown, Ma which is very similar to San Francisco in terms of culture and it’s a lot of fun to be there. Provincetown also is great for shopping, art galleries, and whale-watching.

II. I am a fairly Republican; I have a few views that are more democratic but more views that are conservative; therefore, I feel like I am a moderate Republican. I have been raised in a conservative, Republican family which contributes to my beliefs today-I believe in the Church, traditional family values, and at the same time support civil rights for members of the LGBTQ+.

III. The role of the government is best put by a quote from Abraham Lincoln: “government should do for people only what they cannot do better by themselves, and no more.” I believe a small government is good government. National defense should be the main priority of the federal government.  It is NOT their job to try to “change” society and make things “equal.  As an effective American citizen, each American should claim some responsibility in regards to how their life and this country are being run. Individuals have a right to pursue happiness and secure a bright economic future for their family.  Successful people should be able to keep their hard earned money and should not have to give a higher percent of their income to the government.  I also think individuals have a right to defend themselves and their families with a firearm.  Individuals also have a right to pass on traditional values to their children.  While people do have right to be in a relationship with whomever they want, the federal government should not force states to allow same-sex marriage. 

IV. Under the system of federalism, marriage is a power reserved to the states. It is the job of the federal government to secure our borders and protect our free-market system that has made this country one of the richest in the world.  It is not the job of the federal government to change society.

V. In regards to my political view, three specific issues that resonate with me are abortion, equality for LGBTQ+ individuals, and increased censorship. Abortion is something I think is simply wrong. I believe that women do have rights, but those rights entail having safe sex or using a variety of birth control mechanisms that are on the market today. When a women “accidently” gets pregnant, I believe that it may be a “mistake” but they should have to face the consequences. Punishing the unborn fetus, regardless at what stage in might be at in its life is cruel and unruly. Affirmative action is also something that I feel passionate about. I believe that the solution to ending discrimination is not backwards-racism but truly achieving equal opportunities for all races and genders, especially for members of the LGBTQ+ community. I support same sex marriage rights. Censorship is another issue that concerns me. Although the first amendment is extremely important, there has to be some sort of line that’s drawn on what’s displayed on TV during daytime hours. Young kids shouldn’t be exposed to the extreme “freedoms” that the bill of rights entails. Meaning, vulgar images and nudity shouldn’t be exposed on TV during daytime hours on regular non-cable networks.
