The Family & Consumer Science Department at West Chicago Community High School strives to provide real world learning experiences for students in the areas of Hospitality, Culinary Arts, Early Childhood Education, Interior Design, and Fashion Technology. Our courses are designed to expose students to a variety of career fields and prepare them for their future studies at a university, community college, trade school, or to enter the work force. The FACS curriculum also focuses on preparing students to be responsible students and adults and provides several labs and hands on learning experiences. We have two Foods labs for our students. One is a traditional, six kitchen Family & Consumer Science classroom and kitchen where we hold Foods 1. The other contains a culinary kitchen for our Foods 2 and Foods 3 courses. Both rooms contain stainless steel appliances, new counter-tops/cabinets, teacher demo tables, and a pantry with walk-in refrigerators and freezers. We offer several options for students to earn college credit through the College of DuPage by enrolling in our courses. Students can earn college credit by taking Child Development 1 & 2, Introduction to Education, or Foods and Nutrition 3. In the 2023-2024 school year, West Chicago Community High School students taking FACS courses earned 145 hours of college credit, saving students and their families $20,300 in future tuition.
