Social Studies

Welcome to the Social Studies department webpage. This page provides information on our courses and teachers within the department as well as the clubs and organizations sponsored by some of our teachers, such as JSA, Scholastic Bowl, and Fed Challenge. We hope this site is useful to you and welcome any comments.

The Social Studies Department's core philosophy is to teach students to be effective citizens in our global community. The department is organized around a focus question of What is an effective citizen in a global community? Each course has a focus question related to the departmental question that guides the curriculum. Each unit of study also has a focus question related to the course focus question. The purpose of these questions is to provide opportunities for in-depth study, rather than simple memorization of facts and dates. They also provide an historical context for current issues and give students a chance to analyze those issues. Each unit also has content and skills that build off of the previous one and prepare students for the next

The four year sequence builds off of the knowledge learned in the previous course and simultaneously prepares students for the next course in the sequence. We start with a broad look at the world and then narrow our focus as students progress through the required credits.

Freshmen Year:  World Geography  -  How do different aspects of the global community interact with each other?

Sophomore Year:  World History  -  How does history impact the global community?

Junior Year:  American History  -  How have American ideals shaped our country and global community?

Senior Year:  American Government  -  What is an effective citizen?
