CHS MATH TEAM WINS REGIONAL TITLES --

ADVANCES TO STATE COMPETITION

On February 22, 2003, nearly 30 members of Community High School's Math Team competed at the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics' Regional competition. ICTM's regional math contest is held in February each year at universities across Illinois. Thousands of students compete for a chance to advance to the ICTM State Math Contest held at the University of Illinois on April 26th.

This year, Community High School's Math Team has two regional champions. Mike Doll, a senior, won the regional title in the Pre-Calculus individual event. And while the team only had six people competing in the Junior/Senior Eight-Person event, those six people brought home the regional title in that event as well. Seniors Pat Baur and Kim Peterik and juniors Phil Buksa, Roger Maritote, and Andy Kiger joined Mike Doll in the event. It is Baur's third and Doll's second trip to Springfield. Baur qualified last year as an individual in Advanced Algebra last year and teamed up with Doll two years ago in the Freshmen-Sophomore Two-person competition.

"We knew Mike's score was strong enough to go downstate, and we weren't surprised about him winning the regional title," said Aaron Hayes, one of the math team's head coaches. "The eight-person team was a great surprise. We had six quality people competing in the event, but being two people short is a disadvantage. Their teamwork helped make the regional title possible."
