Community High School Valedictorians and Salutatorian
Recognized at Honors Night
Eleven Community High School students share the honor of Valedictorian status this year. They were recognized at the Honors Night Ceremony on June 4. Valedictorians include Christina Adduci, Phil Buksa, Alyssa Campagnoni, Christine Harris, Krista Johnson Alethea "Lathie" Norton, Brett Palmer, Kimberly Rovtar, Jacqueline Vavrek, Jessica Warbiany and Amanda Weier.. All the of the Valedictorians graduated with a 4.0 average and were ranked number one in their class. They never received anything less than an A in their high school classes.
Christina Adduci is the daughter of Linda and James Adduci of West Chicago. Christina has been an active participant in a variety of activities over the past four years. She was a three-year participant in Cross-Country and a three-year participant Track and Field. Christina was a state qualifier in Cross-Country and Track receiving Most Valuable Player two times in Cross-Country. She placed 14th in the State in the 2-mile. Christina also received All-Region recognition three times, and All-Section recognition once in Cross-Country. Christina received Academic All Conference recognition in the D.V.C. for Cross-Country and Track three times as well.
Christina was a member of the Future Business Leaders of America for the past three years where she served as Reporter. She qualified for State Competition three times and National competition as well. She also participated in V.I.C.A. and qualified for State as a sophomore.
Christina is a member of the Spanish Club, a member of the Spanish National Honor Society, a member of the National Honor Society, an Illinois State Scholar, an Academic Merit Award Winner, and a member of Who’s Who Amongst High School Students. She has volunteered at the Dupage County Convalescent Center. Christina will attend North Central College in Naperville next fall and plans to run Cross-Country, Track and will study Political Science.
Phil Buksa is the son of Nancy and Brian Buksa of Carol Stream. Phil has taken full advantage of the many opportunities that Community High School has to offer. He has participated as a member of the Math Team, placing 1st and 3rd in Regional Competition and Qualifying for State. Phil is a member of the German Club, and he was chosen German I "Student of the Year". He is a member of the Science Club, Junior State of America, and Co-Captain of the Scholastic Bowl Team. He was recognized for his outstanding performance by being selected to the DuPage Valley All Conference Scholastic Bowl Team. Phil has also participated in Tennis, Basketball, Track, and Football during his four years as Community High School.
Phil has been very involved with community service initiatives as well as having participated in numerous Blood Drives with Key Club, Santa’s Secret Shop, Trick-or-Treat for the needy, and he has Snowball.
The Boy Scouts of America recognized Phil for his meritorious achievement by granting him Eagle Scout designation. Phil has taken every Advanced Placement Course Community High School has to offer. Phil is a member of the German National Honor Society, the National Honor Society and was elected Vice President of that organization this year. He is a Daily Herald All Academic Team member, an Illinois State Scholar, and a Community High School Academic Award Winner. Phil will serve as a Quarknet Intern at Fermilab this summer. He is the recipient of the Notre Dame Club of Chicago Scholarship, the Voice of Democracy Scholarship, and the Robert J. Byrd Scholarship. Phil will attend the University of Notre Dame next fall and will major in Physics.
Alyssa Marie Campagnoni is the daughter of Linda and Arthur Campagnoni of Winfield. She is a member of the National Honor Society and has been on the High Honor Roll all four years of high school. She is a member of the Spanish National Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), Student Council, International Club, Student Ambassadors, Peer Helpers (Peer Helper Natural Leader), and The Federal Reserve Challenge Team. During her high school career she has also been a member of the Wellness Committee, Pep Club, Best Buddies, and the First Place Math Club calculator team.
Alyssa has participated in our Wildcat athletic programs. She played basketball for two years and soccer for four years. She was Varsity Soccer Captain her junior year. She was chosen to the DuPage Valley Conference Academic All Conference Team all four years. This past year Alyssa served as a manager for the Junior Varsity Boys Soccer team.
Alyssa was Homecoming Queen this past fall. Alyssa has contributed to the community as well. She served as a teen director of Snowflurry for three years. She has served on a peer jury, worked in the Character Counts program, and raked leaves for the elderly. Alyssa plans to attend the Western Illinois Honors College and study bilingual/bicultural education. She aspires to study abroad, learning Spanish and traveling across Europe.
Christine M. Harris is the daughter of Lonnie Harris and Michelle Lorman, and the stepdaughter of Tim Lorman of West Chicago. Christine has been very active over her four years at Community High School. She is a four-year participant in Volleyball, a two-year member of the Community High School Student Ambassadors Club, a member of the National Honor Society, a member of Who’s Who for American High School Students, a member of the Spanish Honor Society, a one-year member of Forensics, and a member of the Horticulture Club.
Christine is very active in her church and volunteers regularly as a pre-school teacher in Sunday School. Christine is a High Honor Roll student, an Academic Merit Award winner, a Prairie State Achievement Award winner, an Illinois State Scholar, and was recognized by the Math Department for Outstanding Performance in Mathematics in her first three years. She will receive a $12,500 Hermann Muelder Scholarship from Knox College each of the next four years. She plans on majoring in Biology and Environmental Studies at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, next fall.
Krista Johnson is the daughter Anne and Geoffrey Johnson of Carol Stream. Krista is a member of the Award Winning Yearbook Staff, the Spanish Club, and the International Club. She is a two-year participant in basketball, a four-year participant in softball where she earned varsity letters and the Wildcat Pride Award in her sophomore year. She is a three-year member of the Tennis Team where she was elected Captain as a senior. She also earned the Coach’s Award, the Most Improved Player Award as a sophomore and junior, and the Most Valuable Player Award in her senior year. Krista earned DuPage Valley Academic All Conference recognition in her sophomore, junior, and senior year, as well as Honorable Mention All Conference in Tennis as a senior.
Krista is a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society. Krista is an Illinois State Scholar, a Prairie State Achievement Award Winner, and an Academic Merit Award Winner. She is also a member of Who’s Who Among American High School Students, and also the recipient of the Excellence in Mathematics Award. Krista will attend the University of Illinois next fall and is undecided upon a major field of study at this time.
Alethea Vivienne Norton is the daughter of L.B. and David Norton of West Chicago. Lathie has been very active over the past four years. She is a four-year participant and Varsity Letter Award Winner in basketball. She received Honorable Mention All DuPage Valley Conference recognition. She was also a four-year participant and Varsity Letter Award Winner in volleyball.
Lathie is a four-year participant in Orchestra. She played first chair cello and was recognized for her outstanding play achieving a Division 1 Rating for Solo and Ensemble in her sophomore and junior years. She is a two-year participant in Symphonic Band, for whom she played drums. Lathie was Drum Captain in her sophomore year and also participated in Marching Band and Pep Band over her career.
Lathie received DuPage Valley Academic All Conference recognition in basketball and volleyball. She was nominated for the Illinois High School Association All-State Team. She is a member of the National Honor Society, the Spanish National Honor Society, an Illinois State Scholar, and Academic Merit Award Winner. Lathie is the recipient of the Dean’s Scholarship from Taylor University, the V.F.W. Post 6791 and the Ladies Auxiliary Scholarship, the Dan Johnson Scholarship and the West Chicago Lions Club Scholarship. She was also named the Lions Club Athlete Scholar at 2004.
Lathie has taught Sunday School in her church for the past four years. She plans on spending a year in Honduras teaching preschool age children in a bilingual school and will then continue with her education at Taylor University in Indiana.
Brett A. Palmer is the son of Mary Rebecca Palmer of West Chicago. Brett has been very active within the school and community over the past four years. He participated on the Math and Chess Teams.
He is a four-year participant in Marching Band, Symphonic Band, and Pep Band. Brett has also played in the Jazz Band, Jazz Combo, and was Vice President of the Band in his senior year. He has been recognized on numerous occasions by different organizations for his quality play, including the First Chair Award and the Woody Herman Jazz Award here at Community High School for two consecutive years. He earned the Outstanding Soloist Award at the New Trier Jazz Festival in 2002, Outstanding Soloist at the St. Louis Music Festival in 2003, and Outstanding Soloist Award at the Evanston Jazz Festival in 2004. Brett was also chosen to the I.M.E.A. District IX Jazz Band this year, and is the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award recipient as well.
Brett is a Prairie State Achievement Award Winner, a member of the National Honor Society, a member of the Spanish National Honor Society, an Illinois State Scholar, an Academic Merit Award Winner, a Dartmouth Book Award Winner, and an All-American Scholar. He has been recognized by Who’s Who Among American High School Students. He is an Elmhurst College Presidential Scholarship winner, an Elmhurst College Music Scholarship Award winner, an Honorable Mention in the 2004 Daily Herald Academic Team, and a National Merit Letter of Commendation Award winner.
Brett tutors and loves entertaining community members on his tenor sax in his spare time. He will attend Elmhurst College next fall and will major in Jazz Studies.
Kimberly Anne Rovtar is the daughter of Deborah and Steven Rovtar of West Chicago. Kim has been very active in the arts and has been an active participant in athletics over the past four years. She is a four-year participant in softball, and a two-year participant in basketball. She earned DuPage Valley All Conference recognition in Softball and was also selected the DuPage Valley All Academic Team. Kim has participated in Symphonic Band all four years and recently played first chair flute and melophone. Kim was also selected sectional and squad leader in band.
Kim is a member of the National Honor Society, the Spanish National Honor Society, a Prairie State Achievement Award Winner, an Illinois State Scholar, and an Academic Merit Award Winner. The Community High School Mathematics Department recognized her for her excellent performance in mathematics with the Excellence in Mathematics Award this year.
Kim is very active in her community and has participated in the Humanitarian Service Project, planned the games and activities at the Parish Picnic, and completed the Crop Walk with her church the past two years. Kim will attend the University of Illinois next fall and will major in Accounting. She would eventually like to become a Certified Public Accountant.
Jacqueline J. Vavrek is the daughter of Jill and Joe Vavrek of West Chicago. Jackie will be remembered, amongst other things, as the finest swimmer in the history of Community High School. She is a four-year Varsity Letter Award Winner, a four-time DuPage Valley Champion, a three-time Most Valuable Swimmer Award Winner, a one-time State Runner-Up and a three-time State Champion in the 50-yard Freestyle. She is a seven-time All-American and is presently ranked 7th in the Nation in the 50 free.
Jackie has also participated in track, Snowflurry, and the Humanitarian Service Project. She is a German tutor, has served on the Prom Committee, is a member of the Student Ambassador Club, and has served as President of the Class of 2004 in Student Council all four years.
Jackie is a member of the National Honor Society, a member of the German National Honor Society, an Academic Merit Award winner and an Illinois State Scholar. She was chosen "German Student of the Year" by our German Department last year.
Jackie is a recipient of the Dan Johnson Scholarship and the Wisconsin Alumni Association of Chicago Scholarship. She will attend the University of Wisconsin in Madison next fall on a scholarship for swimming and will major in Chemical Engineering.
Jessica M. Warbiany is the daughter of Barbara and John Warbiany of West Chicago. Jessica has participated in numerous activities while at Community High School, including Scholastic Bowl, Women’s Chorale, Concert Choir, Mixed Choir, Girl’s Ensemble and Math Team. She was also recognized for Outstanding Achievement in Mathematics and Chemistry.
Jessica is very active in her community and has volunteered monthly at the Homeless Shelter, Habitat for Humanity, Exodus World Service, the People’s Resource Center, and the Outreach Community Center Christmas Store. Jessica also teaches Sunday school and Vacation Bible School at her church. She taught Bible School to Natives in the Arctic through Eagle’s Wings in the past as well.
Jessica is a National Honor Society member, a Spanish National Honor Society member, an Illinois State Scholar, and an Academic Merit Award Winner. She is the recipient of the Augustana Presidential Scholarship for $10,000 and the Augustana Rissing Scholarship for $2,000. Jessica will attend Augustana College next fall. She would eventually like to become a Pastor in an E.L.C.A. church.
Amanda M. Weier is the daughter of Kim and James Weier of Carol Stream. Amanda has been very active over her four years at Community High School. She participated in swimming for two years, Track and Cross-Country for four and two years respectively. She earned a varsity letter in Track and Cross Country. Amanda has also been a member of the Math Team all four years.
Amanda is also very active in the community, having volunteered at the DuPage Convalescent Center, and at her church where she was a Student Youth Group Leader. She assisted individuals with disabilities at her church as well.
Amanda is a member of the National Honor Society, the Spanish National Honor Society, an Illinois State Scholar, and an Academic Merit Award Winner. She plans to attend Illinois Wesleyan University next fall and will major in Pre-Med and Spanish.
Amy Lynn Norman is the Salutatorian for the Class of 2004.. Amy is the daughter of Debbie and Scott Norman of Carol Stream. She has been extremely involved in various activities her four years at Community High School. She participated in indoor and outdoor track as a Freshman. She participated in Concert Choir as a Sophomore, Junior, and Senior, where she was elected a class officer. She was a member of the Women’s Chorale participating in the Fox Valley Music Festival as a Junior and a Senior. She participated in the Illinois State Solo and Ensemble Contest receiving a Superior Rating. In the Geneva Swedish Days Music Competition she took third place
Amy has been a member of S.A.D.D (Students Against Drunk Driving) and T.A.T.U. (Teens Against Tobacco Use) for three years. She was elected Treasurer of S.A.D.D. as a Junior. She participated in Youth in Industry and the Artworks Music Festival. In the Voice of Democracy Speech Competition she took second place.
Amy has also been active in her community. At Central DuPage Hospital she volunteered over 430 hours and was elected to the Teen Leadership Council. Twice Amy volunteered for the Appalachia Service Project Mission Team helping to build and repair homes. She participated in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life and the Toys for Tots Reindeer Run. With her church, the First United Methodist Church, Amy served as a Sunday school teacher and a vacation Bible school group leader.
Amy is an Illinois State Scholar, An Academic Merit Award Winner, a Butler University Academic Scholarship Award Winner, a Century 21 Kammes United Scholarship Award Winner, A Carol Stream Women’s Club Scholarship Winner, a President’s Education Award Winner, and a member of the National Honor Society. Amy will attend Butler University next fall and will study Health Sciences.
