PeaceBuilder of the Month
Alma Ortiz, of West Chicago, is currently a Sophomore at Community
High School. Alma
received the PeaceBuilder Award for her upbeat attitude and ability to take=
on
leadership roles. Alma’s various teachers have note=
d her
desire to help others and lead activities.=
She is to be commended for her service and desire to improve the
atmosphere here at CHS.
Alma
credits Mahatma Gandhi with providing her lessons about peace and ethical
conduct. For Alma, peace means everyone getting alon=
g, no
wars or fighting, and no racism. As
she stated, “I hope someday peace is powerful enough to overcome all =
the
hatred.” She also menti=
oned
that her friends and family are good role models for peace.
One of Al=
ma’s
favorite songs promoting peace is, “Where is the Love?” by the
Black Eyed Peas. Her most mem=
orable
quote relating to peace is, “Love makes the world go round.” Alma
seems to truly answer the calling to sacrifice her time and energy to bring
peace and happiness into the lives of others by routinely volunteering at l=
ocal
shelters and retirement homes.
Aside from actively participating in community service, Alma has also managed to keep very good
grades in high school. She pl=
ans on
attending college after graduation.
