Teaching qual= ity in District 94 has taken a major step forward following yesterday’s announcement by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBP= TS®) that Mary Ellen Daneels, a tea= cher in the Humanities Division at CHS, has achieved National Board Certificatio= n® in 2008.
This announce= ment comes shortly after the highly respected National Research Council of the National Academies found that students who are taught by NBPTS teachers make higher gains on achievement tests than those taught by teachers who have not applied or who did not achieve certification.
Research cons= istently shows that teachers who achieve this status provide their students with qua= lity learning. Like Board certification in medicine or accounting, National Board Certification is teaching’s highest professional credential. It is a rigorous, voluntary, performance-based assessment program designed to recog= nize and reward accomplished teachers who have demonstrated advanced teaching knowledge, skills and practices. The program typically takes one to three years to complete.
The process a= ssesses teachers on their knowledge of the subjects they teach and requires them to= build a portfolio of samples of their students’ work including assignments = and video recordings.
