Grolier and World Book
These encyclopedias will lead you to detailed information about a country as well as related topics such as people and culture.

World Geography
Database focused on country and culture information.There are country overviews, news items, biographies, primary-source documents, culture and environment sections, glossary terms, maps, photos, audio and video, statistics, e-books and more.

Fact sheets from the U.S. Department of State include basic information, short histories of the country, background on the people, and even travel/business information.

BBC News: Country Profiles

Country profiles that include information about national leaders, mass media in each country and links to news and other content on the BBC site.

CIA World Factbook
http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/
This site from the CIA provides a strong basic overview of information about each country. Good for political and "transnational" issues, or issues that affect other countries beyond their boundaries.

Cultural Profiles Project

From the Canadian office for Immigration, this site provides a lot of detailed information about the cultures of countries listed.

Infoplease: Country Information

Good overview of basic country information. Great for flags and maps for reports. There are also links to more information about the country from the Infoplease site.

Library of Congress: Country Studies

These Country Studies give a detailed overview of the history, social, economic and geographic information about each country. Make sure to pay attention to the "last updated" date at the bottom of each page if you need current statistics.

Links to other quality websites about various types of information about each country (e.g. history, government, literature, etc.). Great site for when you are looking to a number of sites and a lot of specific information about your country.

National Geographic: Country Profiles

Part of National Geographic's MapMachine website, this site has basic information about each country and a link to its CIA World Factbook entry. But its best feature is the collection of maps for each country.

Yahoo Directory: Country Information
http://dir.yahoo.com/Regional/Countries/
A huge number of links about various aspects of each country and it's states and regions. Though there is much information, it has not necessarily been included because it is good information. Proceed with caution.
