Letter to parents reagrding Family Life / Sex Education Unit

The General Assembly of the State of Illinois has enacted legislation that requires every high school student in the state to receive at least one semester of instruction in "health education." This legislation also requires that the health education program include the study of "human growth and development," an area that includes topics generally considered a part of sex education.

In order to meet these requirements Community High School has developed a health education class that is taught to all freshman students. The Administration and Board of Education of District 94 have reviewed the content of this course and believe that the program is needed. In recognition of the sensitive nature of the unit on human growth and development, the Board has established certain guidelines for instruction, which it feels, are necessary to keep the moral and ethical questions that accompany this topic in perspective. These guidelines include:

  1. the fact that moral issues, dilemmas and choices are involved in the areas must be stressed,
  2. all sides of controversial issues must be presented objectively,
  3. the school must avoid the advocacy of a particular moral position or practice,
  4. instruction should be presented in a dignified and respectful manner, and
  5. the Administration should monitor the program as closely as possible.

Your freshman son or daughter is enrolled in the school's health education program. However, the Illinois School Code states that as a parent or guardian you have the right to examine the instructional materials used in the unit on human growth and development before it is taught, and that you may choose to exclude your student from that specific unit. If you wish to examine the instructional materials used in the human growth unit and/or speak to the chairperson of the Health Department regarding the exclusion of a student, please contact Mr. Dan Johnson at 630/876-6470.

Sincerely,

Dan Johnson, Department Chairman

Health - PE - Drivers' Ed.
