Art
1 This
is a basic to intermediate level drawing class. One of the major
goals of the course is to learn to see the way an artist sees
in order to draw the way an artist draws. Step by step drawing
exercises and lessons will help students gain control and confidence
with their drawings. A broad range of drawing materials, techniques
and styles will be explored including: pencil, crayon, markers,
charcoal, pastels, craypas, conte crayon, contour drawing, shading
techniques, gesture drawing, emotional drawing, lettering/calligraphy,
pen and ink, mixed media, portraits, caricatures and cartooning

Art
2
This
course picks up where Art 1 left off. Drawing with line, color
and value will assist students with the transition into painting
and computer graphics. Numerous special effects are explored
while the students work with temperas, watercolors, acrylics
and mixed media. In graphic design, students will be introduced
to both traditional and contemporary approaches. Projects range
from logo design and layouts to complex designs, drawings, and
paintings

Ceramics
1
This
studio course will teach students the basic hand building techniques
in clay (pinch, slab, and coil). Students will be expected to
create projects that reflect the historical development of ceramics.
Use of a potter’s wheel is optional.

2
The
goal of this course is to solve design problems using clay and
other media. Finished projects may incorporate leather, fibers,
metal, wire, wood, shells, etc. Advanced problems require the
combination of hand building techniques with wheel thrown pieces.

Design 1
Discover
the world of design as expressed in cultures past and present.
Learn about such time-honored processes as stained glass, many
types of sculpture, copper enameling, jewelry making, and batik,
mask making, wood burning, wood carving, weaving, and macramé,
among others.

Design 2
The
emphasis of this course is on invention, problem solving, and
craftsmanship. Students will be assigned unusual problems to
experiment with and solve. The key question on all students'
minds will be - What if? Areas that will be covered are architectural
design, product design, toy design, inventions, and found object
sculpture. Traditional materials will be used in experimental
ways to achieve new solutions to design problems.

Computer
Art 1
Using
the computer art program, CS2, students will create digital
artwork using the computer as the medium of expression. The
basics of Photoshop, scanning, and print techniques will be
mastered in this course. Materials will be supplied. Students
are encouraged to purchase a thumb drive to backup work from
the hard drive. Extra materials may be purchased through the
bookstore.

Keyboarding and Art 1 are strongly recommended, but not required

Computer
Art 2
This
course requires students to produce a marketable composition
based on the concepts and techniques learned in Computer Art
1. Extensive mastery of Photoshop, professional printing, layout,
and design elements for the Internet will be goals for this
class. Adobe Image Ready and Adobe GoLive are the two web-based
programs utilized in this class. Students in this course will
also take assignments from Community High School's publicity
department.

Painting
1
This
course is for the student who desires an in depth experience in
fine art painting techniques associated with watercolor and tempera
paint. Students will have many opportunities to achieve a higher
level of mastery in watercolor and tempera painting. These skills
will also prepare students for working with other paint media
such as acrylics, alkyds and oils. Students will also learn how
to mat and/or frame their paintings.

Painting 2
This course is designed for students who wish to specialize in painting. They will get the opportunity to not only learn more advanced techniques, but also to develop their own preferred painting style. Watercolors, temperas, gouache, acrylics, mixed media, and alkyds will be available to work with in depth. Students will learn how to stretch and prepare their own canvases. They will also be asked to study several professional artists with special attention being paid to analysis, interpretation and motivation. If a college entrance portfolio is desired, assistance will be given throughout the formal application process for art schools and colleges.

Studio
Art
Students
who want to apply for art scholarships, or major in art in college
are required to have a portfolio of their best artwork. This
course helps these students to prepare their artwork for submission.
Students will have the opportunity to improve in areas they
are less proficient in, as well as produce additional high quality
work in areas they currently have more mastery. Students will
learn how to take slides of their finished work. Assistance
will be given throughout the formal application process for
art schools and colleges.
Prerequisite:
Art 1, Art 2 and at least 2 art classes in an area of specialization
such as: Ceramics 1 and 2, 3D Design 1 and 2, Computer Art 1
and 2, etc.
