A team of students from Community
High School in West Chicago rece=
ntly
made decisions which awarded them 1st
Place in their Illinois stock market competition.
The winning students, part of a Consumer Education class taught by
Donald Zabelin, competed in The St=
ock
Market Game™ (SMG) program coordinated by the Illinois Council on Economic Education=
. Each team in the competition inves=
ted a
simulated $100,000 in common stocks or mutual funds. Teams could buy and sell shares at=
any
time during the 15-week period.
“The students’ success in the game is based on how the
actual stock market performs” Zabelin said.
The team that took 1st
Place had a final portfolio value of
$148,754. Their return was mo=
re
than 79% better than the performance of the S & P 500 during the same t=
ime
period; and more than $15,000 ahead of the second place team from New Trier
High School. Members of the team included Krist=
en Beres, Danielle Brown, and Nicole Jacobsen. There were a total of 1,532 teams =
in the
State-wide competition. =
Zabelin said the experience was valuable for all students who
participated. “The stud=
ents
learned why a company’s stock might be doing well in the market. They also learned about risk manag=
ement
and how to manage a stock portfolio.
The market volatility during October through December made this a
particularly interesting time to be learning about the stock market,”=
he
said.
The SMG program is an investment simulation coordinated for teachers
throughout Illinois
by the Illinois Council on Economic Education, a unit within Northern Illin=
ois
University Outreach. Particip=
